What this measures
Average order value (AOV) is the average amount a customer spends per order. It's one of the fastest levers for profit because raising it spreads fixed acquisition and shipping costs across a bigger basket.
Common ways to lift AOV include bundles, volume discounts, free-shipping thresholds, and post-purchase upsells. Even a 10% increase flows almost entirely to the bottom line.
The formula
AOV = Total revenue ÷ Number of orders.
Worked example
$24,000 of revenue across 400 orders is an AOV of $60. Raising it 10% to $66 on the same 400 orders adds $2,400 in revenue with no extra ad spend.
