What this measures
Profit margin tells you how much of each sales dollar you keep after costs. Gross margin looks only at the cost of the product itself; net margin accounts for everything — fees, shipping, ads and overhead.
For Shopify and DTC brands, net margin is the number that matters. A store can post strong revenue and a healthy gross margin while quietly losing money once ad spend and fulfillment are included.
The formula
Gross margin % = (Revenue − COGS) ÷ Revenue × 100. Net margin % = (Revenue − all costs) ÷ Revenue × 100.
Worked example
On $10,000 revenue with $3,500 COGS, gross profit is $6,500 and gross margin is 65%. Subtract $300 fees, $900 shipping, $2,000 ads and $600 overhead and net profit is $2,700 — a net margin of 27%.
