What this measures
Net profit is what's left after every cost is subtracted from revenue — product, payment fees, shipping, advertising and overhead. It's the real measure of whether a business makes money.
Net profit margin expresses that as a percent of revenue, which makes it easy to compare across months or against benchmarks regardless of how big the top line is.
The formula
Net profit = Revenue − (COGS + fees + shipping + ad spend + operating expenses). Net margin % = Net profit ÷ Revenue × 100.
Worked example
On $50,000 revenue with $17,500 COGS, $1,500 fees, $4,500 shipping, $10,000 ads and $6,000 overhead, total costs are $39,500 and net profit is $10,500 — a 21% net margin.
